Roof Rats are more aerial than Norway Rats in their habitat selection and often will live in trees or on vine covered fences. Landscaped residential or industrial areas provide good habitat, as does vegetation of riverbanks and streams. They will often move into sugarcane and citrus groves. Roof Rats are sometimes found living in or around poultry or other farm buildings as well as in industrial sites where food and shelter are available. Being agile climbers, Roof Rats frequently enter buildings from the roof or accesses near utility lines which they use to travel from area to area. They have been found in sewer systems, but this is not very common.
Feeding Habits:

The food habits of Roof Rats resemble those of tree squirrels, since they both like a wide variety of fruit and nuts. They also feed on a variety of ornamental and native plant materials. Like the Norway Rat, they are omnivorous and will feed on most anything if necessary. Roof Rats usually require water daily, though their local diet may provide an adequate amount if high in water content.
Feeding Behavior:

Roof Rats usually begin searching for food shortly after sunset. If the food is in an exposed area and too large to be eaten quickly, yet not too large to be moved, they will usually carry it to a hiding place before eating it. Many Rats will hoard considerable amounts of solid food, which they may or may not eat later. When necessary, Roof Rats will travel considerable distances for food. They can often be seen at night running along overhead utility lines. They may live in trees or attics and climb down to a food source. This is important from the standpoint of control, for traditional baiting or trapping on the ground or floor may intercept very few Roof Rats. Roof Rats have a strong tendency to avoid new objects in their environment and this can influence control efforts. These Rats may take several days before they will approach a bait station or trap.
Reproduction and Development:

Born in a nest about 21 to 23 days after conception, the young Rats are naked and their eyes are closed. The 5 to 8 young in the litter develop rapidly, growing hair within a week. When they are 9 to 14 days old, their eyes open and they begin to explore for food and move about near their nest. In the third week they begin to take solid food. The number of litters depends on the area and varies with nearness to the limit of their climatic range, availability of
nutritious food, density of the local Rat population and age of the Rat. The young may continue to nurse until 4 or 5 weeks old. Young Rats generally cannot be trapped until about 1 month old. At about 3 months of age they are completely independent of the mother and are reproductively mature. In tropical or semitropical regions, the breeding season may be nearly year-round. Usually the peaks in breeding occur in the spring and fall.
Senses:

Rats see poorly, relying more on smell, taste, touch and hearing. They are considered to be colorblind, responding only to the degree of lightness and darkness of colors. Roof Rats also have an excellent sense of balance. They use their tails for balance while traveling along overhead utility lines and are very agile climbers.

DFW has five straight record highs, but at least bugs are gone!

Those searching for a silver lining to the nonstop burning heat need look no farther than the sky above or the ground below.

Mosquitoes are missing. Fire ants are hiding.

"There are no mosquitoes to speak of, and the fire ants are so deep underground they're not evident," said Rodney Beaman of Fort Worth Pest Control in Arlington.

Brent Russell, owner of Tarrant County Pest Control in Fort Worth, said he isn't getting any calls on webworms, either. That bug, a bane to pecan and hackberry tree owners, prefers wet weather.

"The year we had all the flooding on the Brazos was when the webworms were bad," Russell said.
Flooding, we don't have to worry about.

North Texas remains in a drought as temperatures hit triple digits for the 35th consecutive day. The high at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport was 107 on Friday, the fifth straight day of record highs.

Joe Harris, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, said it could be mid-August before the highs dip below 100.

"It's just going to stay hot and dry for a while," he said.

And that's just no good for fire ants.

Mike Merchant, a professor and urban entomologist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, said fire ants build mounds for two reasons: to get out of wet soil and to collect heat during cool weather.

"They don't have either of those reasons right now," he said. "They're foraging after midnight, then they go back underground."

Merchant agreed that mosquitoes aren't bad now but warned that they're still around -- especially the ones carrying the West Nile virus.

"They're stealthy biters," Merchant said.

Dry weather will bring out some bugs and not others. For instance, termites aren't swarming this summer, but ant swarms are fooling people, Russell said.

"They'll see the wings on the swarmers and think they're termites," he said. "My advice for anyone who thinks they're seeing termites is to call a professional."

Roaches also are a perennial problem. But their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a poorly kept home.

Large random roaches may appear in anyone's home as they search for moisture, Beaman said.
"I saw one in my house," he said, "and that's like a dentist having a cavity."

But roaches aren't the only problems; rodents, too, come into people's homes looking for water.
"All of the water that's usually around in creeks and other areas is dried up," Russell said.

Russell said that rodent calls have increased about 50 percent above normal, and most are about rats.
"Roof rats and Norwegian sewer rats are the most common in North Texas," he said.

Rats can exploit the tiniest gaps in a home's integrity with teeth that can gnaw through just about anything, Russell said.

"They chew on wood, pipes, wires," he said. "I've seen them chew through water pipes, even the hose from the washing machine to a wall, flooding the washroom."

Rocky Wien, with Orkin in North Richland Hills, said that most customers call because they've seen something around the house that worries them.

"Most insects are just like people, looking for food, water and shelter," Wien said.

Ants

The first line of defense is to remove the attractants: keep counters free ofcrumbs and sticky spots. Cover the sugar and put the honey jar in a plasticbaggie. Cut off water sources such as drips or dishes left soaking overnight.If the ant invaders persist, try these simple measures:

Keep a small spray bottle handy, and spray the ants with a bit of soapy water.
Set out cucumber peels or slices in the kitchen or at the ants' point of entry. Many ants have a natural aversion to cucumber. Bitter cucumbers work best.
Leave a few tea bags of mint tea near areas where the ants seem most active. Dry, crushed mint leaves or cloves also work as ant deterrents.
Trace the ant column back to their point of entry. Set any of the following items at the entry area in a small line, which ants will not cross: cayenne pepper, citrus oil (can be soaked into a piece of string), lemon juice, cinnamon or coffee grounds.
Mix one liter of water, one teaspoon of Borax and a cup of sugar. Soak cotton balls in the solution and place them in a small yogurt container with holes punched in the lids to allow ants access. Place container in a location where ants are present. Ants will carry the bait back to their colonies where it will eventually kill the colony. Important: use indoors only; must be kept away from pets and children.
Leave a small, low wattage night light on for a few nights in the area of most ant activity. The change in light can disrupt and discourage their foraging patterns.
Ants on the deck? Slip a few cut up cloves of garlic between the cracks.
For long-term nontoxic control of ants, sprinkle diatomaceous earth where ants congregate.
Clove oil-based commercial ant killers are available in two forms: AntEater organic ant killer, and BugShooter insect control spray.

Cockroaches

The best defense against cockroaches is a clean kitchen and bathroom. If roaches are a problem in your home or apartment, vacuum well and wash the areawith a strong soap. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag in a sealed container.

Diatomaceous earth is a safe alternative which can be sprinkled in areas where roaches congregate, especially hidden areas such a cabinet tops and behind appliances. Harmless to people, the tiny particles cut the waxy exoskeleton and kills the insect within 48 hours. For a week or so after the treatment, the dehydrating insects will search more actively for water. Therefore, do not be surprised if you see roaches more often after the treatment. Most roaches should be killed within two weeks of application.
Catnip is a natural repellent to cockroaches. The active ingredient is nepetalactone, which is non-toxic to humans and pets. Small sachets of catnip can be left in areas of cockroach activity. Catnip can also be simmered in a small amount of water to make a "catnip tea" which can be used as a spray to apply around baseboards and behind counters. This natural repellent should only be used in homes without cats!
Keep a spray bottle of soapy water on hand. Spraying roaches directly with soapy water will kill them.
In an empty one pound coffee can, place 1 or 2 pieces of bread which have been soaked thoroughly with beer. Place in areas known to have roach infestations.
It is a little known fact that roaches like high places. If you put boric acid on TOP of your kitchen cabinets (not inside), if space allows between ceiling and cabinets, the roaches will take the boric acid to their nests, killing all of them. Boric acid is toxic by mouth - keep away from children and pets.
Leave bay leaves, cucumber slices or garlic in the affected area as deterrents.

Fleas

Fleas usually gain entry to your home through your pet or visitors' pets. Forevery flea on your pet, there may be as many as 30 more in the pet'senvironment.Before reaching for pesticides, try these safer choices:

Bathe and comb your pet regularly. Use mild soap, not insecticides. If fleas are found on the comb, dip the comb in a glass of soapy water.
Citrus is a natural flea deterrent. Pour a cup of boiling water over a sliced lemon. Include the lemon skin, scored to release more citrus oil. Let this mixture soak overnight, and sponge on your dog to kill fleas instantly. Do not use citrus oil on cats.
Add brewer's yeast and garlic, or apple cider vinegar, to your pets' food. However, it is not advisable to use raw garlic as a food supplement for cats.
Cedar shampoo, cedar oil and cedar-filled sleeping mats are commercially available. Cedar repels many insects including fleas.
Fleas in the carpet? The carpet should be thoroughly vacuumed especially in low traffic areas, under furniture, etc. Put flea powder in the vacuum cleaner bag to kill any fleas that you vacuum up, and put the bag in an outdoor garbage bin.
Trap fleas in your home using a wide, shallow pan half-filled with soapy water. Place it on the floor and shine a lamp over the water. Fleas will jump to the heat of the lamp and land in the water. The detergent breaks the surface tension, preventing the flea from bouncing out.
In the yard or garden, plant fleabane (Fleabane Daisy Erigeron speciosus) to repel fleas. This is an annual growing 16-24" tall with violet, daisy like flowers.
Nontoxic flea traps are available commercially. These traps are inexpensive and very effective.
For long-term nontoxic control of fleas, sprinkle diatomaceous earth where fleas may occur. You can also rub diatomaceous earth into the fur of your cat or dog.

Mosquitos

The first line of defense against mosquitos is to seal their point of entry.Mosquitos are most active in the early morning and early evening. They seek areas of still air because they are hampered by breezes. Close windows and doors on the side of your house which are opposite the breeze. Then try:

The most important measure you can take is to remove standing water sources. Change birdbaths, wading pools and pet's water bowl twice a week. Keep your eaves-troughs clean and well-draining. Remove yard items that collect water.

There is a superstition that earwigs burrow into the ears of people while they sleep. There have never been any confirmed cases of this really happening. Earwigs frighten many people because of the pincers on the back of their abdomens. Earwigs use these pincers for defense and for catching prey.

There are more than twenty species of earwigs in the United States. Depending on the species, adults range in size from ¼” to 1”. They are slender insects with two pair of wings. Some species produce a foul smelling liquid that they use for defense. Earwigs also produce a pheromone (scent). Scientists believe that this pheromone is the reason that earwigs cluster together in large numbers. Immature earwigs (nymphs) resemble the adults except they do not have wings.

Earwigs are active at night. During the day they hide in cracks in damp areas. They live under rocks and logs and in mulch in flowerbeds. Earwigs eat plants and insects.

Outdoors, earwigs spend the winter in small burrows in the ground. In spring the female lays eggs in the burrow. She tends the eggs until they hatch. Then she cares for the nymphs until they can find their own food.
Earwigs are attracted to lights. They can become a nuisance on porches and patios on summer evenings. In the morning they will be gathered under things like cushions that were left outside overnight.

Earwigs move into homes to find food or because of a change in weather.

Homeowners often find them in areas where there is water – kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Earwigs can also find their way into bedrooms and family rooms. They turn up in almost every part of the house.

The most important part of controlling earwigs is eliminating their hiding places. If the earwig harborages are not addressed, insecticide application will probably not control earwigs very well. There are a variety of things that can be done.

Move landscape timbers, logs, decorative stones, and firewood piles away from the foundation. Create a zone next to the foundation that is free of mulch, dead leaves, and other organic material. The “dry zone” should be 6” to 12” wide so that earwigs will avoid it. Trim trees and shrubs that cause damp, shady areas near the house.

Examine gutters and downspouts to make sure they drain away from the foundation. Set irrigation systems so that they water in the morning and allow the landscape to dry during the day.

Adjust outdoor lights to shine from the yard onto the house – insects will be attracted away from the house. If moving outside light fixtures is not practical, consider changing light bulbs to “bug light” bulbs. Repair screens on crawl space vents and make sure the vents are not blocked. A dehumidifier might help in a damp basement.

As construction on the freeways surrounding this city and its adjacent neighbors continues, officials want to prevent one unintended product of the work from scurrying into the neighborhoods: rats.

Before work begins on the west segment of the West County Connectors project in the coming weeks, the Orange County Vector Control District placed some 100 rat bait stations along the I-605 and I-405 freeways that back up to the Rossmoor community, Larry Shaw, the district's operations director, said Monday.

Vector control inspectors also visited 157 homes in Rossmoor last week to distribute information leaflets. Inspectors surveyed 35 of the homes for rat activity at the request of homeowners, and in six of the homes, inspectors placed additional bait, according to a letter from the district to a community group, the Rossmoor Predator Management Team.

County officials want to prevent a recurrence of what happened last fall, when Caltrans employees had to stop work on the 22 and I-405 freeways in Seal Beach after coming across a large pack of rodents. Concerned that the rats would head to the College Park neighborhood in Seal Beach, the Orange County Vector Control was called to the rescue.

"It was probably a sizeable number of rats," Shaw said. He estimated it was a couple hundred rats.

At the time, vector control workers set about 60 bait stations between Valley View Street and Seal Beach Boulevard – a 3/4-mile stretch around homes in Seal Beach and Garden Grove. Once the rats ate the poison, they died within three to five days, Shaw said.

The next phase of the freeway connector job, affecting the I-405, 22 and I-605 freeways near Seal Beach and Rossmoor, is scheduled to get under way as early as Jan. 17, according to Orange County Transportation Authority officials. This time, county departments coordinated so that vector control workers got there first.

That's been the norm for years, Shaw said.

The baits are one weapon officials have used to lower the number of rats living by the freeways. Other tools include eliminating the grassy side areas "where rats can live in no man's land," Shaw said.

Some freeway sections, where vegetation has been cut down dramatically and cement walls separate the road from the neighborhoods, no longer offer an inviting spot for rodents. Other freeways, however, such as sections of the I-5 and 57 freeways and the I-405 to the south, have more rat activity, Shaw said.

"Caltrans has done a pretty good job these days of making it less attractive for them," Shaw said.
At one time it was common for the area along the I-405 in Westminster and Garden Grove to have carob trees, which offered rats edible bark and pods and a place to nest in. These have been replaced with ice plants and crepe myrtle, which are not attractive to rats, according to Shaw.

Today, there is more awareness about what to do to avoid rodents in neighborhood backyards: put away the bird seed and the pet food, keep vegetation pruned and make sure homes don't have openings that would allow the small rodents entry.

Signs of the unwelcome guests include: damaged, partially eaten oranges, avocados or other fruits, signs of gnawing on plastic wood or rubber materials, rat droppings and greasy rub marks caused by the rats' oily fur frequent rubbing against surfaces.

While that sounds good keep in mind that almost 95% of your home is enclosed with sheet rock, flooring, furniture, etc. This means that you will have a difficult time proving what is old damage compared to new damage.

Bedbugs are gifted hitchhikers. They don’t hop or fly but they sure can crawl, especially when motivated by the promise of a good hiding place, such as your checked baggage. While your bag is in the plane’s cargo hold bedbugs “may have hitchhiked on someone else's luggage on the plane and transferred to yours,” suggests Brian DiCicco, CEO of Pest Management Inc.

Bedbugs love upholstery, too, so they might also be lingering in the taxi or rental car you used to reach your hotel. Ah, yes, your hotel. Lest you think bedbugs only linger in fleabags – with all due respect to fleas – the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) points out that a “bedbug infestation is not a sign of unclean or unsanitary conditions. Bedbugs don't discriminate and have been found in world class hotels and budget properties alike.”

But after all this effort to stow away and hide out, what is it that bedbugs really want? You. “Bedbugs use exhaled carbon dioxide and body heat to locate a potential blood meal,” says Mike Deutsch, an entomologist with the Arrow Exterminating Company, adding that “when hungry, bedbugs will travel 30-40 feet to and from their hiding places and their sleeping hosts when seeking a meal.” The critters may already be waiting in their favorite places – the headboard, mattress and box spring, or the bedding itself – but bedbugs also may be hiding “anywhere in a room,” suggests Deutsch. “We have found bedbugs inside laptop computers, cell phones, clock radios, TVs, and other electronic devices. We have also found [them] in book bindings and even inside newspapers that are delivered to your room.”

If they don’t join you in your destination, bedbugs also have the potential to hook up with you on the plane or cab ride home, of course. So what’s a traveler to do? There are several steps you can take to protect yourself and bite bedbugs before they bite you.

Know what you’re looking for

Bedbugs resemble other small insects, so if you’re trying to spot bedbugs or signs of them while inspecting your hotel room upon check-in, know that the bug looks “similar to a tick,” says Ashley M. Marratt, CEO of informational Web site The Bed Bug Answer. Further, “a bedbug “is a small rusty-red or mahogany colored, oval-shaped insect,” says entomologist Lynn Frank, technical director of the Suburban Exterminating Company and “signs of bedbugs can include adult insects, slightly smaller and lighter colored ‘nymphs’ which are young bed bugs that have not fed yet, and bed bug eggs which look like small grains of rice,” says entomologist S. John Barcay, a senior scientist at Ecolab, which has treated more than half a million hotel rooms for bedbugs since 2003.

Adds Barcay, “other signs of bedbugs on the mattress are small drops of blood in a row or black spots that look like mold -- this is actually digested blood from their previous meals.” To put a finer point on it, the spots are “bloody fecal matter,” Maratt says, “smaller than the size of poppy seeds.” The black spot will “stick to the surface. If it falls off, then it's not a bed bug spot. Take a wet towel and wipe the spot to see if it smears and if so, then it may be fecal matter.” DiCicco notes that maturing bedbugs “can sometimes leave behind exoskeleton pieces as well, which are translucent” that Marratt says are “the color of a popcorn kernel shell.”

Protect yourself in your hotel room

Even if your check-in inspection doesn’t turn up signs of bedbugs, you should still go into bedbug avoidance mode. Keep your suitcases and clothes off the bed and carpeting at all times, all sources urged. Place your bag on a luggage rack if one is provided and you might even take it a step further by moving the rack into the bathroom, as “bed bugs do not like tile or metal and are rarely found in these areas unless the infestation is extreme’ says Mike Canizales, co-founder of Sniff K9’s.

If your room didn’t come equipped with a luggage rack and you choose not to share a bathroom with your luggage, avoid unpacking as much as possible and put your used clothing “ in a plastic bag before packing back into your suitcase,” suggests Michael Colongione, president and owner of GotchA! Bedbug Inspectors. “Take the items from the plastic bag directly to the washer when you return home.” Likewise, if you do any shopping on vacation, he says, bag your purchases and wash any new clothing once you’re home. Machine wash hot and, several sources suggest, use an extra hot and long dryer cycle for any garments you bring home from the trip -- bedbugs won’t survive heat above 113 degrees Fahrenheit, DiCicco says.

If you find bedbugs

Should you find bedbugs or signs of them in your hotel room upon check-in, notify management and ask to switch to a different room “with no history of bed bugs and that is not adjacent to, above, or below the infested room,” advises travel risk management firm iJET Intelligent Risk Systems, “ noting that a “bedbug infestation can be a limited, low-level problem -- for example, an infestation in just a single room -- and may not be enough to warrant changing hotels entirely.” However, if you discover bedbugs after you’ve already settled in or spent the night, DiCicco suggests you’re within your rights to ask management to “have your clothing dry cleaned and luggage steam cleaned,” he says, and then “inspect the next room before even starting to get settled.”

If you or any of your traveling companions think you’ve been bitten by a bedbug or have seen bedbug evidence in your room, “make a log of where and when you were bitten, together with photographs” says attorney Elena Rivkin Franz,” at which point you could of course ask for a different room or ask management “to pay for new lodging elsewhere,” Franz says.

If you get bit

Deutsch says that while the actual bite of a bedbug is painless, “most people report an intense itching at the site. Some people will have a reaction similar to a mosquito bite that will last a few days. Other people will have violent reactions resulting in large areas of raised and swollen skin at the site of the bite.” He adds that “since bedbugs have not been shown to transmit any diseases, the primary potential problem with a bedbug bite is a secondary infection caused by constant scratching.” Before using any ointments or medications for your itching, consult your doctor.

Prepare your bags for the trip home

Colongione says you can help dissuade bedbugs from coming home with you by spraying your “suitcase, hotel bed, or rental car with an EPA approved over-the-counter spray” that “kills the bedbugs and their eggs, which the human eye cannot see.” If you’re driving home, upon leaving your hotel, “immediately seal any luggage in large plastic bags -- such as lawn or leaf bags -- prior to loading your car,” iJET advises, and once you get home, DiCicco says, don’t bring your bags directly inside – while outside your house or apartment zap your luggage again with any spray product your bought or wipe your bags down with alcohol. You should also “inspect and vacuum your suitcases thoroughly before bringing them into the house, the NPMA says, and further, says iJET, “luggage can be sterilized using the steam function on many household irons.”

The one thing about bedbugs you absolutely did not want to know

If you are scouting for bedbugs at any point during your trip, you can rely on more than your eyesight to gather evidence. “Other signs of bedbugs may include a foul smell,” Marratt says. “The odor has been described a number of ways. Most say it resembles spoiled raw beef, a musty odor, or a sweet odor. After all, it is old blood you smell.”

Sean Murphy stuffs them in one by one as they hiss. The small barbs on the cockroaches' kicking legs cut his lip and the inside of his mouth, but he is doing this for a cause.

Murphy, a pet store employee, will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for holding Madagascar hissing cockroaches in his mouth for 10 seconds on Sunday.

The record attempt will be part of the Halloween Spectacular at Preuss Pets, where Murphy works, to raise money for the Harris Nature Center.

After seeing a video of the unofficial cockroach record holder, Murphy said he knew he could top it. That inspired his attempt last October, when he held 16 hissing cockroaches in his mouth for 10 seconds, but it was not verified as an official Guinness World Record because it did not meet several guidelines.

The official Guinness World Record for this feat is six cockroaches, and Sean hopes to officially double that by putting 12 of the insects in his mouth Sunday.

Earning a title is not his primary motivation though, he said.

"To raise money for the nature center is even better," Murphy said.

Money raised at the event will go toward building a new river outlook for educating classes at the Harris Nature Center.

"We knew we could turn it into something useful and helpful," said Rick Preuss, store manager of Preuss Pets.

The previous unofficial record was held by Travis Fessler, a 37-year-old member of the Pickled Brothers Sideshow, based in Kentucky, who fit nine of the hissing cockroaches into his mouth in October 2008.

Fessler did the stunt to promote a haunted house that benefited a charity called "Shop with a Cop," he said.

"I acknowledge that it was something silly I did, but it was for a charity and to bring attention to the show," he said.
